I despise the impact AI is having on photography, graphic art, and the creative world as a whole, yet I know it's here to stay. As a photographer, I realize that adapting to AI is essential if I want to thrive in this evolving field—much like my initial resistance when shifting from film to digital. I'll continue prioritizing authentic, traditional photography and ensure AI doesn't eclipse my genuine artwork, but I'm open to experimenting with it as an innovative tool.

Using AI as a tool to brainstorm

One of the most effective ways I’ve integrated AI into my photography practice is by using it for creative brainstorming. It enables me to quickly generate poses, scenarios, and concepts—even when no model is available. I can also produce reference images to communicate my vision to models during pre-production clearly. Most importantly, this approach allows me to evaluate whether an idea works visually before the shoot, helping us make the most efficient use of studio time.

Using AI to adjust photos

Another approach I am considering for integrating AI into my photography workflow is its potential use as a post-production editing tool—for instance, to modify backgrounds or refine images based on concepts developed after the shoot. That said, I have not found this approach particularly appealing. I believe the original photograph is almost always stronger on its own, even without an enhanced or more dramatic background. Similarly, I have not been satisfied with AI-generated image touch-ups. I strongly prefer the traditional, hands-on method of editing each step myself in Photoshop or other professional software. While this process is more time-intensive, it allows me full creative control, ensures the work is precisely tuned to my vision, and gives me a greater sense of pride in the final result.

MusclePix is also toying around with ways to use AI video to bring our photography to life.

Here's one example of using a series of still photographs and using AI to animate the model in between poses.

Another significant way AI has supported my professional photography work is by helping me refine and clarify the language on my website, social media posts, and other written materials. I have also used AI to create both imagery and language for my additional business website, TheMuscleShop.BiZ. Feel free to check it out!
